Can you lay sod where a tree used to be?
Yes, once the stump has been ground out and the grindings dealt with. Turf laid straight over grindings settles badly as the wood breaks down, so the hole gets backfilled with soil and firmed first.
How soon can I walk on it?
Keep off it as much as possible while it roots. Light foot traffic is usually fine after a couple of weeks, but that depends on the weather and how well it has knitted down.
